Returning to work after paternity leave

Returning to work after paternity leave as a first-time dad can be challenging.

It has helped knowing that my partner is at home with him on maternity leave until at least the end of the year.

The toughest part has been spending the past 3 weeks with them and now having to leave him at home missing out on spending time and possibly missing out on the first time he does things such as walking and talking.

Here are a few tips to help make the transition a bit easier:

Plan ahead:

Before returning to work, make sure you have a solid childcare plan in place with your partner. Make sure they have everything they need to care for your child while you're at work and book in for friends/family to come and visit during the week if possible

Communicate with your partner:

Talk to your partner about your plans for returning to work. Discuss your schedules, how you can best support each other, and ways you can stay connected throughout the day

Stay connected with your child:

Make the most of your time with your little one when you're not at work. When you are at work if you can text your partner to check in on your child and get updates on how they're doing throughout the day on your breaks

Prioritise self-care:

As a new dad, it's important to take care of yourself too. Make sure you're getting enough rest (this one may be a struggle), eating well, and taking breaks to do things you enjoy outside of work

Seek support:

Don't be afraid to reach out to other new dads or parents for support. They can offer advice, empathy, and maybe even a few laughs as you navigate this new chapter

In conclusion, returning to work after paternity leave can be challenging. But with some planning, communication, and self-care, you can make the transition smoother and continue to build your bond with your little one. Remember, you're not alone in this journey!
