How to Get Ahead in the New Year When Looking for a New Role

After some time off, spending time with family and friends, January is a perfect time to achieve your New Year’s Resolutions and if one of those is to start looking for your next role, some of these tips could be great for you, for a stress-free New Year.

Step 1 - Decide exactly what you are looking for:

Whether you are seeking a promotion within your current field or a sideways move into a slightly different role, it is important to decide what you are looking for before speaking with recruiters or applying for roles.

  • Take a step back to reflect on your career so far
    • o What have you achieved?
    • o What has gone well?
    • o What hasn’t gone so well?

Think about your strengths and weaknesses, if there are any gaps in your experience and if there is anything you want to improve upon?

  • What do you want from your next role?
    • o Progress into a more senior role
    • o Move into a new industry/specialism
    • o Returning to work after a break

Take some time to decide the type of firm you are looking to work at next, whether this is industry specific, a large firm or SME.

Step 2 - Have a step-by-step plan:

Decide how and when you are looking to interview. If your current role involves you being in the office full-time it may be harder for you to attend in person interview, therefore, Teams interviews may be best for you. Decide how many interviews you would like to attend and whether you want to compare job roles against other roles or if you are happy with just going to 1 interview and finding the right fit for you. It is easy to get overwhelmed attending multiple interviews, so find a balance that works best for you.

Step 3 - Explore different avenues:

  • Upload your CV to job boards
  • Speak with recruiters in your area
  • Have a look on Google
  • Check social media

Step 4 - Try not to burn yourself out and fully commit to the process:

If you follow all the above steps, it will be a lot easier to not burn yourself out.

Once you have found the perfect role for yourself, fully commit to the process and starting your new role.
