A Work-Life Balance That Works

Work life balance is a word that’s thrown around in job adverts and culture talk with employers but what does it really mean? Because it’s such a personal and subjective concept, it can look completely different from one person to the next. The most important thing is understanding what balance means for you and how it fits into your lifestyle.

Back in 2016, when I welcomed my first child, I knew I needed to work for an employer that respected my choices and encouraged me to continue developing at work and achieving career milestones at my own pace, all whilst supporting me in raising a young family.

For me, having a work life balance has truly given me a better headspace at work and a more refreshed mind for parenting. Working part time and continuing with my career progression has given me a sense of purpose that is truly mine and something I can control.

Would this have been possible without such a supportive employer? Absolutely not. We hear so many horror stories of people leaving their career due to caring responsibilities and unrealistic working patterns, so I feel fortunate to have found a way to make it work in partnership with Rutherford Briant.

Firstly, we’ve always had open conversations about what I want to achieve, whilst keeping the business needs in mind. We’ve fostered a relationship where there is genuine care and trust between all parties. I know that they’ve got my back and they know that I’ll do what needs to be done to get the job done.

I’ve been fortunate in my tenure at Rutherford Briant to have witnessed its growth from the early days of 2012, right to now and many more years to come. I’ve seen what the business puts into its employees and I’ve taken every opportunity that’s come my way, regardless of working a shorter week, I’ve never once felt left behind or undervalued.

Valuing your employees on what they put into the business rather than hours worked or previous experience is by far the most rewarding part of my role. It’s a reminder that when employers truly invest in people, everyone thrives.
