From London Life to Local Impact

I moved to Rutherford Briant around 2 years ago, having spent the first 6 years of my recruitment career working for a large agency in London. I absolutely loved the time I spent there, however about 5 years in; I realised I wanted, and needed, something different. My life was moving on and I needed my job to adapt with that.

I wasn’t entirely sure what direction I wanted to take, so I had a fairly open, exploratory chat with Toby, the Managing Director at Rutherford Briant, to see if this would be the right fit. Within 15 minutes, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

Travel & Balance

What made me open to the opportunity right away was the location. Rutherford Briant is a 15-minute drive from where I live rather than an hour’s train journey into London. I wanted to own my own home, build a family and enjoy work-life balance. I knew this wasn’t possible in London, however Rutherford Briant made all of that very simple for me.

Cutting the commute has given me so much more time to enjoy life outside of work, take on new hobbies and have a social life again. And don’t get me started on the cost of commuting into London – I was spending as much on travel as I once did on rent. Not anymore!

Cultural Changes

When I first considered a career in recruitment, London was the dream with the buzz of the City. However, this soon turned into hustle and bustle on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night. I wanted somewhere I could remain social but not feel the pressure to go out all the time to fit in.

Rutherford Briant has a completely different atmosphere. While we still celebrate success with quarterly rewards, annual incentive trips, evenings out and team building activities, there is zero pressure if you have something else on or just don’t feel up to it. Do what works for you, your social battery, your life!

Driving Change

Big agency certainly had its strengths. But one it did not have was the ability to genuinely drive change and make a difference. That’s something that really appealed to me moving to Rutherford Briant. Here, I have the opportunity to lead initiatives that make an impact across the entire business, not just within a single team. I now feel in charge of my own desk, my own team and my own future, rather than following a cookie-cutter plan. I now have the ownership to do what is right for me!

Moving from London to a regional firm was a big decision and one that deserves careful thought. However, having that initial conversation could be the best decision you make!
